Once the Japanese thrust toward Port Moresby had been negated, the Allies moved to expel the enemy from New Guinea so that it could be secured as a base of operations for the planned counterattack through the SWPA. After a prolonged debate it was decided that clearing the Japanese from all adjacent areas should isolate Japanese forces at Rabaul. As part of the first stage of this plan the Australians were allocated the task of driving the Japanese from the Huon peninsula. | |
