RAAFNS - MAETU (Medical Air Evacuation Transport Unit)

From July 1940 nurses from the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service (RAAFNS) tended sick and wounded airmen in RAAF hospitals in Australia and overseas. Over 600 women joined the RAAFNS. A small number flew with Medical Air Evacuation Transport Units, bringing patients needing urgent treatment from the front line to hospitals, often a difficult and hazardous task. Five RAAFNS sisters died, two in aircraft crashes.
